"It's like you said, sometimes you gotta choose the lesser of the two evils." Light Turner to James Turner

It could be said that the law is what drives Light in life. The loss of his mother and then the subsequent criminal getting away with the murder has substantially colored his view of the world. Criminals deserve to die because they've done something that goes against the law of the land, the law of the people. Light wants a better world. If a better world had existed just years earlier, he'd likely still have his mother, and maybe even a baby sister.

He tries hard to do good, though the way he kills his victims is often brutal, a symbol of the power he feels from killing and his hatred of those who bully, steal, kill, and rape. He wants to give the world the god it wants and the god it wants is the one that will end the men and women that cause so much suffering.

He is both Lord Kira and Light Turner. Being Kira has become a way of life for Light, a job. He's cleaning the streets, saving people, and he's doing it all with the help of the girl he'd been crushing on, Mia Sutton.

Mia plays another large part to Light in the movie, his foil when it comes to his idea of what can and should be done in the name of justice. She's rather cool and detached and her relationship with Light only begins after he shows off what he can do. He does whatever he can to make her happy, up until a point.

That point, like what drives him, is the law. At one point, Light catches on quickly that he's being followed, that he's under watchful eye. When Mia catches on, she urges Light to kill them, though he refuses, knowing full well that any move he makes will only bring L one step closer. It doesn't help that Light flat out refuses to kill law officials, the only one he has much interest in getting rid of is L due to the older man's obsession with catching him (which grew after Watari was killed by Light, the page of the Death Note torn by Mia so Light couldn't destroy it and save L's mentor).

Without the Death Note, Light Turner is your average bullied kid. He gets his ass beaten when he tries to help people, he does other people's homework to get cash, and he even has complete and total meltdowns when the world is going crazy. He's not this badass kid. He's not Light Yagami. The girls don't look at him, he keeps his head down, and basically soaks himself in music, headphones blasting in his ears, so he doesn't have to deal with the stupidity he sees around him.

He's still dealing poorly with the murder of his mother and it can be a delicate subject, though far less delicate now that the man is dead thanks to Light himself. Any discussion of the law is bound to catch his attention and any talk of Kira is most definitely going to catch his attention.

Right now, at the point he's coming in, Light's just woken from a week long coma thanks to a great fall into the water, surviving miraculously thanks to what he wrote in the notebook, killing Mia, whose obsession with the notebook had gone so far as to write Light's own name down. He even begs her not to do this, not because he was going to die, but because she was. He'd taken the time to write Mia's name down, writing that she would die if she attempts to take and keep the Death Note—surprise, she does. As the ferris wheel breaks down, she lets go to catch the Death Note, setting into the motion of events that burns the page with Light's name. He was aware what Mia would do if she had the notebook, of what she'd already done. He still does not believe in killing the innocent and it's made clear throughout multiple times in the movie that his view of the law is largely thanks to his father being the head of the Seattle PD and his mother's death. It's only made greater after he gains the notebook.

He's not a god, though he has the possibility of developing a god complex given enough time with how people are taking Kira's murders. Mostly, he's tired of humanity the way it is and when L appears on the television, calling him out, it does show that something in him is changing thanks to the Death Note, Ryuk and Mia's influence. Ryuk wants him to kill more, Mia wants him to kill more, and Light just wants to save the world from itself.

At the very end of the film, Light admits to his father that he is Kira. He knows how much his father has fought against Kira but that doesn't change the fact that it is his father. The only reason L found out Light was Kira was because James made a public statement after the death of seven agents, as Light had been one of the ones followed, condemning Kira for such acts against the law and its agents.  When James isn't killed for his forwardness, it quickly becomes clear who is Kira.

Inventory: The Death Note, along with the IV attached to him and all its accouterments, and one lovely hospital gown.

Abilities: He's the current owner of the Death Note and that gives him the ability of life over death. He can kill just about anyone as long as he has their name, face, and a pencil, pen, or even a little blood to get the name written. He's good at games of logic and manipulation is one of his top qualities. He's incredibly intelligent but his emotions can often get in the way of logic (but not always).

Flaws: Light would claim there's nothing chaotic about him but, the reality is, he causes a lot of chaos and drama. Some of it comes from being a teenager, some of it comes from being an emotional shitbag, but most of it comes from his use of the Death Note. He can kill anyone as long as he can see their name and face and even control their actions, forcing them to write, kill, or do anything that is within the current realm of possibility.

Without Ryuk here, Light can't give up the note, though people can use the Death Note so long as they have the name and face of their victim. Light cannot see a person's name or face unless they've been introduced or he trolls the network for video posts. And with death being an impermanent thing, Light finds that the Death Note is basically useless at times.

Light is also a teenager going through puberty and this in itself is just one fucked up chaotic mess of emotions.  Leave me alone, mom!  Wait, I mean dad. /cries
